Photographs of the year according to the most prestigious World Press Photo contest
The jury of the prestigious prize in the field of photojournalism World Press Photo Contest announced the laureates of the 59th annual photo contest on the 18th of February. This time they faced a difficulty to make a choice out of 82 951 works sent by 5775 photographers from 128 countries of the world.
The prize of the international press World Press Photo conteestwas awarded to Australian Warren Richardson for the picture "Hope for a new life” in the “Photo of the year”. The photo shows refugees passing the child through a barbed wired fence.
Among the laureates of the year 2016, there are two Russian photographers. Vladimir Pesnya received the first prize in the "Sport" category for the photo "Hockey in Vetluga". Sergei Ponomarev, who photographed a photo story about the migration crisis in Europe, took the first prize in the "News" category. The award ceremony washeld in late April 2016 in Amsterdam.

US Army Specialist 21-year-old Natasha Shuet was forced to abandon the idea of testifying to an officer who raped her at Fort Jackson's training camp in South Carolina. Despite the pressure of higher-ranking officials, Natasha decided to go further, and now Senior Sergeant Luis Corral is serving a four-year sentence in prison; as it turned out, five female soldiers were subjected to violence on his part. The army leadership eventually rewarded Shuet for her courage and gave her the case as an example of imitation for other victims of sexual violence. Natasha now serves on the Fort Bragg base in North Carolina.
The Calvert series captured Shuet and other female victims of sexual violence in the US Army. Despite Natasha’s triumph, only one out of ten cases of rape ends with a sentence, in most cases the rapists simply leave the army. Their victims continue to suffer from post-traumatic stress syndrome, depression, paranoia and other mental disorders.
