Lettres du Voyant: Joseph Beuys x Nam June Paik – HOW Art Museum, Shanghai
After a two-year preparation, the HOW Art Museum in Shanghai recently inaugurated its exhibition of the year – Lettres du Voyant: Joseph Beuys x Nam June Paik. Curated by Dr. Gregor Jansen and Kim Nam Soo, the exhibition presents the representative works by German artist Joseph Beuys (1921–1986) and Korean-American artist Nam June Paik (1932– 2006), chronicling their artistic careers, and further discussing the cooperation and close relationship between these two avant-garde artists throughout the 20th century. On view till May 13, Lettres du Voyant is also the first institutional joint exhibition of the two artists who left a generous legacy through their respective works.
1 + 1 = 1 Million – Vito Schnabel Gallery, St. Moritz
From February 15 to March 11, 2018, Vito Schnabel Gallery presented 1 + 1 = 1 Million, an exhibition curated by artist Tom Sachs to spotlight American conceptual artist Sol LeWitt’s significant works. Through a largescale wall drawing from 1978 and 19 luminous framed works on paper beginning from the 1970s, Sachs drew visitors into LeWitt’s careerlong exploration of authorship and the means by which it can be defined. The exhibition focused on three of the thirty-five statements from LeWitt’s 1969 Sentences on Conceptual Art, highlighting the ineffably poetic outcome of pursuing these ideas to their logical extreme.
Liquid Lake Mountain – Talwar Gallery, New Delhi
On February 8, 2018, the Talwar Gallery in New Delhi inaugurated Liquid Lake Mountain – a solo exhibition of new works by artist Alwar Balasubramaniam. The works reflect the shifts in pace and perspective that have accompanied Bala’s recent move from Bengaluru to the countryside in South India. The natural world comes to occupy a central role in all these works – not only as subject matter or even material but also as a kind of collaborator in their creations. On view till May 12, the exhibition portrays a sense of diversity, both in its use of materials and in its interpretations of the concept of transformation.
Egyptian Photojournalist Faces Death Penalty
Mahmoud Abu Zeid, alias Shawkan, is an Egyptian photojournalist who was apprehended on August 14th, 2013, while covering the anti-government demonstration in Cairo. He was assigned by Demotix–a British photo agency–to report on the clashes between the army, and the supporters of deposed President Mohamed Morsi, which took place in Cairo’s Rabaa al-Adawiya Square. Zeid, along with more than 700 people, has been charged with murder, attempted murder, and membership with the Muslim Brotherhood. The Egyptian prosecutors have appealed for ‘maximum penalty’, that is death by hanging for all the accused. He was held without any trial or charges till March 2016. The UN Working Group considers his imprisonment as arbitrary, and they have also demanded for his immediate release.
