1 + 1 = 1 Million – Vito Schnabel Gallery, St. Moritz
From February 15 to March 11, 2018, Vito Schnabel Gallery presented 1 + 1 = 1 Million, an exhibition curated by artist Tom Sachs to spotlight American conceptual artist Sol LeWitt’s significant works. Through a largescale wall drawing from 1978 and 19 luminous framed works on paper beginning from the 1970s, Sachs drew visitors into LeWitt’s careerlong exploration of authorship and the means by which it can be defined. The exhibition focused on three of the thirty-five statements from LeWitt’s 1969 Sentences on Conceptual Art, highlighting the ineffably poetic outcome of pursuing these ideas to their logical extreme.
Kavadsa – Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai
From February 7 to 13, 2018, Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai presented Kavadsa – renowned photographer Shailan Parker’s enthralling ‘Journey with Light’. ‘Kavadsa’ is the Marathi word for the thin beams of light that enter a room through the gaps in a tiled roof. Kavadsa showcased Parker’s photographic expressions as fine art and shared with the audience his exploration of the medium. Captured in black and white, the photographs allowed viewers to see what the photographer saw, view the world as he did and yet experience it in their own unique ways.
The Air is a Mill of Hooks – Bikaner House, New Delhi
From February 7 to 17, 2018, Vadehra Art Gallery presented a solo exhibition of artist Anju Dodiya’s recent body of works titled The Air is a Mill of Hooks at the Bikaner House in New Delhi. At the exhibition, Dodiya experimented with paintings rendered on shaped mattresses, fabric combines and unbleached cotton. Fraught with psychological perplexity and set to confront viewers with a poised theatricality, with some of the mattresses contoured into blood or teardrops, a sail, or a cross, the works on display simultaneously reminded viewers of the warmth of domestic interiors – making them feel as if they have entered a Renaissance pageant that has been interrupted by a torture scene.
Liquid Lake Mountain – Talwar Gallery, New Delhi
On February 8, 2018, the Talwar Gallery in New Delhi inaugurated Liquid Lake Mountain – a solo exhibition of new works by artist Alwar Balasubramaniam. The works reflect the shifts in pace and perspective that have accompanied Bala’s recent move from Bengaluru to the countryside in South India. The natural world comes to occupy a central role in all these works – not only as subject matter or even material but also as a kind of collaborator in their creations. On view till May 12, the exhibition portrays a sense of diversity, both in its use of materials and in its interpretations of the concept of transformation.
