I wish to let you fall out of my hands – Experimenter, Kolkata
On January 30, 2018, Experimenter in Gariahat, Kolkata, opened I wish to let you fall out of my hands (Chapter I), showcasing works created by artists Bani Abidi and Naeem Mohaiemen. The exhibition marked the first chapter in a two-chapter exhibition, the second of which inaugurated Experimenter’s second space at Ballygunge Place, Kolkata, on February 21, 2018. The works on view at the exhibitions used film and photography to explore the complexity of human relationships and the spaces they occupy – whether transitory, aspirational, imaginary or reclaimed. The twopart exhibition also included a series of lecture performances, workshops and discussions.

Photojournalist Max Desfor Dies at 104
Max Desfor, a former Associated Press (AP) photographer, the ex-photo editor of US News & World Report, passed away on 19 February in Maryland, USA, due to complications from a stroke. He was 104 years old. Desfor began his career as a messenger and darkroom assistant with AP, in 1933. In June 1950, he volunteered to report on the Korean War, when the North invaded the South. He was awarded the Pulitzer prize for his photograph that showed of hundreds of Korean war refugees, crossing the destroyed Taedong river bridge, as they looked for security from Chinese troops (1950). Later, during World War II, in August 1945, he photographed the bomber Enola Gay, after the B-29 arrived in Tinian. In an Instagram post following his death, fellow photojournalist David Hume Kennerly, had this to say about Desfor... “Max was a photographer’s photographer: Brave. Intrepid. A brilliant newsman. He had a great run.”

Elinchrom Unveils The ELB 500 TTL
Elinchrom has launched a new strobe light–the ELB 500 TTL. The company claims it is the world’s most powerful portable TTL light ever designed. The light provides 500Ws of power from a power pack.The whole set comprises of a 2.48kg power pack with removable battery, along with one or two light heads. The high speed sync allows the shortest shutter speeds of1/8000sec. The ELB 500 TTL has the shortest flash duration of 1/20,000sec. It features a manual lock function, in-built Skyport and Odin ll radio receivers, and a large OLED display. The lithium ion battery possesses a capacity of 72W/h, and can deliver 400 flash bursts at full power. Active Charging allows the battery to charge in or out of the pack, and it can be charged while being used.

Liquid Lake Mountain – Talwar Gallery, New Delhi
On February 8, 2018, the Talwar Gallery in New Delhi inaugurated Liquid Lake Mountain – a solo exhibition of new works by artist Alwar Balasubramaniam. The works reflect the shifts in pace and perspective that have accompanied Bala’s recent move from Bengaluru to the countryside in South India. The natural world comes to occupy a central role in all these works – not only as subject matter or even material but also as a kind of collaborator in their creations. On view till May 12, the exhibition portrays a sense of diversity, both in its use of materials and in its interpretations of the concept of transformation.
